Dance/Movement Therapy
Schaumburg

At Inner Peace Psychological Care, we believe healing does not happen only through words. Sometimes the body holds stress, emotion, and lived experience in ways that are difficult to explain, but deeply important to explore. Dance/Movement Therapy offers a body-based, expressive approach to psychotherapy that supports emotional healing, nervous system regulation, and deeper connection to self.
Dance/Movement Therapy at Inner Peace Psychological Care is provided by licensed mental health professionals with training in body-based and experiential therapeutic approaches.

What Is Dance/Movement Therapy?

Dance/Movement Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses movement, body awareness, and nonverbal expression to support emotional, cognitive, physical, and relational well-being. It is grounded in the understanding that the mind and body are connected, and that movement can be a powerful way to explore feelings, process experiences, and reconnect with oneself.
This work is not about performance, technique, or knowing how to dance. It is about using the body as a source of information, expression, and healing.

How It Works

Dance/Movement Therapy helps individuals notice and work with the ways emotions, stress, and patterns of coping may show up physically. Through guided movement, breath, posture, rhythm, and body awareness, individuals can begin to better understand their internal experiences and develop new ways of responding to them.

Sessions may include:

  • body awareness and grounding

  • gentle guided movement

  • expressive or improvisational movement

  • breath and nervous system regulation

  • reflection on emotional and physical experiences

  • use of movement to support insight, release, and connection

The process is always adapted to the individual’s comfort, needs, and abilities.

Benefits of Dance/Movement Therapy

Dance/Movement Therapy may be beneficial for adolescents and adults who are navigating:

  • anxiety and chronic stress

  • trauma and posttraumatic symptoms

  • depression

  • grief and loss

  • body image concerns

  • identity exploration

  • emotional disconnection or numbness

  • difficulty verbalizing emotions

  • life transitions and burnout

This approach can also be supportive for individuals who are interested in more embodied, experiential, or creative forms of therapy.

What to Expect

No dance experience is needed. You do not need to be coordinated, flexible, or expressive in any particular way to benefit from this work. Dance/Movement Therapy is not about “performing” or doing movement the right way. It is about creating space to slow down, notice, explore, and connect with yourself through the body in a way that feels safe and meaningful. Sessions may involve sitting, standing, stretching, walking, or simple movement depending on your needs and comfort level. Participation is always collaborative, respectful, and paced thoughtfully.
